Me, picking Dan (18, autism) up from tutoring today: You don’t have your book, did you finish it today?
Dan: Yep.
Me: So what are you going to do for tutoring tomorrow?
Dan: SOL [state-mandated] testing questions. I’m excited about going to Central Park Funland afterwards.
Me: That WILL be fun. But I am not going to drop you off in the morning for tutoring, I’m coming in with you for a meeting with [Asst. Principal] Mr. S.
{Get ready for it, this is the “first”}
Dan: Tell me about it.
Me: {Shocked silence}
Dan: TELL me about it!
So I did
Our meaningful dialogues are so few and far between, with me struggling patiently to be interested in gameshows, and it’s usually always about him. What a breath of fresh air! He’s interested in me and my meeting? Thank you, Lord, for blessing me with this moment.
