A Daniel “First”

Would that I had kept a log of all these over the years! I could write the book my family has been bugging me to write.

Me, picking Dan (18, autism) up from tutoring today: You don’t have your book, did you finish it today?

Dan: Yep.

Me: So what are you going to do for tutoring tomorrow?

Dan: SOL [state-mandated] testing questions. I’m excited about going to Central Park Funland afterwards.

Me: That WILL be fun. But I am not going to drop you off in the morning for tutoring, I’m coming in with you for a meeting with [Asst. Principal] Mr. S.

{Get ready for it, this is the “first”}

Dan: Tell me about it.

Me: {Shocked silence}

Dan: TELL me about it!
So I did :-)

Our meaningful dialogues are so few and far between, with me struggling patiently to be interested in gameshows, and it’s usually always about him. What a breath of fresh air! He’s interested in me and my meeting? Thank you, Lord, for blessing me with this moment.
